EXERCISE: MAKING STRANGE

2 minutes, sound and image.

Pick a piece of video that fascinates you, that you want to know more about. This project is about changing your relationship with something you know really well. (The video you are working with has been made by someone other than you.)

Alter the soundtrack according to a variety of methods:

removals (selective removals and replacements of elements of the original sound track)

shuffling (the original sound track is fragmented and redited so as never to synchronize with the image)

delay (the original sound track is delayed from the image by a certain amount of time)

parallel (an entirely different soundtrack is chosen, with little or no edits)

extraneous sources (only materials from other sources are used, none of the original soundtrack)

NO MUSIC.

VIEWING: SOUND AND APPROPRIATION

How is sound functioning in relation with image in the following two pieces? (Both are in the WEEK 9 folder)

Arthur Lipsett – Fluxes

John Smith – The Girl Chewing Gum

xenopraxis – We Know What You’re Looking For, Series 3, Episode 1
